Is your program a scholar project or a speech and debate elective class?

In short, it is both. Unleashing Your Voice! is designed to be adaptable to your needs: You could create a UYV class filled with document studies, multiple written papers, and exercises the scholars do at home; or you could have one prepared speech the whole semester and focus more on in class activities and impromptu speaking. The way you create your speech class is up to you, Unleashing Your Voice! is just here to help you in your goal of creating transformational speakers.

What happens during the two day seminar?

In a nutshell: the first day the scholars do activities while the adults watch; the second day the adults do activities and learn how to do what Kathy and Nate did the first day.

The first day the scholars do a warm-up, many different speeches, and debate (all the while laughing, being coached, learning, having a blast, and so on). The second day the adults many of the same activities as the youth: Many different speeches; debate; as well as (NEW!) Tandem Speaking; and more(!) (All the while laughing, being coached, learning how to coach, and so forth.)

While there are many different activities throughout the course of the two days and from seminar to seminar UYV aims to do only two things: Inpsire and transform. Any activity done and word spoken at the seminar is only there as a way to help improve the abilities of individuals who are not only becoming, but are, and want to be transformational public speakers

Is it important that all the adults observe the first day activities with the scholars?

No... It's not only important it's essential, vital, and even indispensable. The best way for something to be taught is to have three things occur: Show; tell; and do. On the second day of the seminar you are told how to coach ("tell") and you, yourself, are coached (that's the "do"). But if you don't watch the first day (the scholar day) you don't see (you aren't "shown") how to coach scholars. Each of those three things (show, tell, and do) contribute something different to your education. So, in essences, if you don't watch the first day then you are cutting out one third of your education on coaching and on UYV in general.

Why should all the adults attend even if they aren’t all mentoring a class?

Well, for starters, it doesn't cost anything extra to attend the scholar day if you are signed up for the second day (the adult day), which is pretty much the same as saying it's free (which is pretty much the same as saying it's extra fantastic). But more importantly, as parents and mentors we have a responsibility to improve our own education, not just our scholars' education. Not to mention, we are social by nature and how do we communicate? No, not through text messages! By voice: Talking to each other; conversing; speaking (and, yes, even public speaking). That being said, the skills that are taught at the Unleashing Your Voice! seminar will help you not only start a public speaking class (if you so choose) but it will help you in areas of your life other than education as well. The ability to speak well with groups or with individuals can be useful in your profession, your social life, and in your home life (just to name a few areas). And, with ability to see patterns and make connections, many of the things taught at the UYV seminar can be applied to other areas of life not even associated with public speaking.

Now, you may be thinking "Okay, sounds great! I'll have someone else go and I'll just read their notes when they get back." But, unfortunately, the educational funds found here are nontransferable. Hearing about something transformational and experiencing something transformational are two very different dividends. So the question remains: Are you willing to invest $75 in order to gain a wealth of educational earnings?

How will this help in a class other than public speaking?

I have yet to see a class that doesn't incorporate lectures or lessons from mentors, presentations by scholars, discussions between the two, or all of the above. Moreover, an integral part of learning is communicating, it's one of the main ways we get the lesson across. The goal of Unleashing Your Voice! is to help create transformational speakers. Transformational communicators—in any situation. And is there any way to make lectures, lessons, presentations, and discussions better than to make them transformational? The principles of UYV can improve peoples' ability to transform in any communication situation, especially those found in a classroom situation. Plus, UYV helps to strengthen the ability to coach which makes for an overall better environment for great mentoring (in any class). And really, what better way to learn is there than to be transformed and moved to action with the information you have just received (whether that information is regarding public speaking or otherwise)? It's up to you to transform yourself in order to be able transform others. We're here to help that happen.

Are the Mentor Manuals or Student Workbooks optional?

No. Both the Mentor Manual and the Student Workbook are an essential part of the Unleashing Your Voice! program and teach additional principles that aren't even touched upon during the seminar. As it stands the program wouldn't be whole without the Mentor Manual and the Student Workbook. Both ensure that seminar continues longer than just two days: The Mentor Manual contains tools and support materials that assist in creating a speech class or strengthening an existing class (while also strengthening mentors); and the Student Workbook contains exercises and principles that can be done and revisited and can thereby continue improving transformational skills and capabilities for years to come.
